Bonds Flashcards
What is a polar covalent bond?
A bond in which electrons are unequally shared, seen in atoms with differences in electronegativity
What is a non-polar covalent bond?
A bond in which electrons are equally shared between atoms, seen in atoms with similar electronegativity
What is an ionic bond?
A bond in which an electron is transferred (or stolen) from one atom to another. The atoms (now ions) are held together by attraction between opposite charges.
What is a cation
An ion with a positive charge. Occurs when an electron is transferred to another atom.
What is an anion
An ion that took a transferred electron from another atom through ionic bonding, and has a negative charge because of the extra electron
What is electronegativity?
The tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. These atoms steal electrons when bonding ionic-ly
How many electrons fit in the first electron layer?
2
How many electrons fit in the outer valence shell?

What is a covalent bond?
A bond in which electrons are shared
What is a hydrogen bond?
Weak attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slight negative atom such as oxygen or fluorine.
What is the relative strength of known bonds
Covalent>ionic>hydrogen
