Part B2, B3. Flashcards
Rule 11 - where do rules 11-18 apply?
Application - Vessels in sight of one another
Rule 12
SV - Vessel with wind on port side gives way, if wind on same side, windward vessel gives way.
Windward side = opposite side that the main is carried on, or for square rigged vessel - opposite to the largest fore - aft sail.
Rule 13
Overtaking-
A) Any vessel overtaking another shall keep out of the way.
B) Overtaking = more than 22.5* abaft of beam
C) If in any doubt, assume that you are the overtaking vessel
D) Overtaking vessel remains as such until finally past and clear, regardless of any bearing change.
Rule 14
Head on situation-
A) When two PDV approaching head on, they both must take action by altering to stbd.
B) Situation exists when a vessel sees the other ahead so that at night would see mastheads in a line or both side lights, thus by day is the corresponding aspect.
C) If in any doubt as to situation, assume it is.
Rule 15
Crossing situation -
When two PDV’s are crossing and ROC is present, the vessel that has the other on her stbd side is to keep out of the way.
If possible they shall avoid crossing ahead.
Rule 16
Action by give way vessel- (vessel to keep out of the way)
Shall so far as possible take early and substantial action to keep well clear.
Rule 17
Action by stand on vessel -
A) shall maintain course and speed. However may take action when it becomes apparent that the give way vessel isn’t taking action.
B) When the stand on vessel finds her self so close that collision can’t be avoided by the give way vessel alone, she shall take action that will best aid to avoid collision.
C) The stand on vessel shall, so far as possible, avoid turning to port for a vessel fwd of her beam in a crossing situation..
D) This rule does relieve the give way vessel of her obligation.
Rule 18
Responsibilities- (except where rules 9, 10, and 13 otherwise require)
- WIG craft in flight
- Sea plane taking off/landing/ on the water
- PDV (includes WIG on the water and air cushion)
- SV
- FV
- CBD
- RAM
- NUC
Rule 19
Restricted Vis.
A) Applies to all vessels not in sight of one another in or near areas of restricted visibility.
S) Speed should be adjusted with consideration to the conditions
P) PDV shall have their engines ready for immediate manoeuvre
D) Due regard should be had to the conditions when complying with the rules of section 1 of this part.
R) RADAR alone - determine if ROC exists - if yes, Avoid Turing to port for vessel ahead, or towards a vessel abaft of the beam.
R) Except where ROC doesn’t exist - Fog signal fwd of beam or cannot avoid close quarters - Shall reduce speed to min at which can be kept on course - if necessary take all way off - in any event navigate with extreme caution until danger of collision is over.
What is the optional additional sound signal for a vessel at anchor
Romeo, Short long short
What is the sound signal and additional sound signal for a vessel at anchor and aground
ANCHOR: 5 seconds rapid ringing of the bell, > 100m followed by 5 seconds rapid gong. (1 min)
additional - Romeo - short long short
AGROUND - as above but with three distinct strokes of the bell either side of the 5 seconds ringing. (1 min)
Additionally - Unifomm - short short long.
What are the annexes of the colregs
1, technical lights and shapes
2, additional fishing signals
3, technical sounds
4, distress signals
What are the distances a vessels fog signals must be heard from
> 200m = 2NM.
200m-75m = 1.5NM
20m - 75m = 1 NM
<20m = 0.5NM
What are a vessels obligations at anchor
Display lights, day shapes, sound signals, keeping a look out (sight and hearing for radio)
What is the NZ 5 Knot rule
5 knots within:
50m of person in water or another vessel’
200m of Alpha flag
200m of shore or structure
