Aircraft accident
An occurrence with operation of aircraft where a person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage.
Incident
Occurrence other than an accident, associated with operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations.
Fatal injury
Means an injury which results in death within 30 days of the accident.
Serious injury
- Requires 48 hours of hospitalization commencing within 7 days from the date injury was received.
- Fracture of any bone, except fingers, toes, or nose.
- Causes severe hemorrhage, nerve, muscle, or tendon damage.
- Any internal organ.
- Second or third degree burns or any burn covering 5% of the bodies surface.
Substantial Damage
Damage or failure which adversely affects the structural strength, performance, or flight characteristics of aircraft which normally require major repair or replacement of affected component.
Immediate Notification
Notify the nearest National Transportation Safety Board of office when…
An aircraft accident or any of the following serious incidents occur…
1. Flight control system malfunction or failure
2. Inability of flight crew member to perform normal flight duties due to injury or illness.
3. Failure of any internal turbine engine component that results in debris other than out the exhaust path.
4. In-flight fire.
5. Aircraft collision in flight.
6. Damage to property other than aircraft that exceeds 25,000 dollars in estimated cost for repairs.
Preservation of aircraft wreckage, mail, cargo, and records.
Operator must preserve aircraft, property, mail, cargo, etc. until Board takes custody.
Prior to Board takes custody, it cannot be disturbed or moved except to…
1. To remove persons injured or trapped.
2. To protect wreckage from further damage.
3. To protect public from injury.
When shall you file a full report?
The report when an accident occurs or after 7 days of an overdue aircraft is still missing shall be filed within 10 days.
The report on an incident listed in 830.5a shall be filed only as requested by an authorized representative of the Board.
The report shall be filed nearest to the accident or incident.
