Intro to De La Riva
Open Guard
Op standing. Sleeve control and feet on hips.

A

Shrimp closer to Op and use your left hand to grab Op’s right ankle.
Move your left leg from Op’s hip to wrapped around Op’s right leg behind knee.
Your right foot remains on Op’s hip and your right hand controls either sleeve or Op’s lapel.

Butterfly Hook Sweep

Open Guard when sitting

A

Fight for underhook with your right hand..
Right hand wrapped under Op’s left arm.
Left hand controls Op at belt or sleeve or any grip.
Scoot sideways so your right knee in perpendicular to the ground and your left knee is flat on the ground.
Roll to your left shoulder and lift Op with your right leg. (Use the toes of your left foot to push yourself up onto your shoulder.)
Move to Mount or Side Control.

Butterfly Sweep without the Underhook

Open Guard when sitting. Op achieves underhooks.

A

Right hand grabs Op’s belt. Pull him towars you to maintain contact.
Left arm back to prevent Op from pushing your back to the ground. (Keep arm away from Op so he can’t pull it in and push you down.)
Scoot sideways so your right knee in perpendicular to the ground and your left knee is flat on the ground.
Bring left hand in quickly to control Op’s right arm (prevent posting), while you roll to your left shoulder and lift Op with your right leg. (Use the toes of your left foot to push yourself up onto your shoulder.)
Move to Mount or Side Control.

Left hand on Op’s right bicep.

Lapel Single Leg

Half Guard Sweep

A

Op in Knee Shield.
Drop right knee and sit up to Op.
Underhook to Op’s left leg.
Use your left hand to feed Op’s right lapel to your right hand between Op’s legs. Scoot your hips to the right to increase your reach.
Open half guard by dropping your right foot to the mat and curling it under Op.
Come up to your knees and push through Op to the double leg take down. (Op’s captured lapel prevents sprawling).

Bridge for Half Guard Sweep or Retention

You have Op in Half Guard and Op has hugged your head.

A

Open Half Guard and bridge to roll Op.

If Op counters by posting his right leg out, this allows your left knee to slide in against his hip.
Right leg over Op’s hip.
Hand Gable Grip over Op’s left arm.
Roll your arms to the right to move Op’s chest and allow your left leg to slip around to closed guard.

Using Hook to go from Half Guard to Closed Guard`

Recover Guard from Half Guard

A

You have Op in Half Guard,
Op has both knees on the ground.
Use your left hand to push on Op’s right leg and shrimp to get your right knee past Op’s leg.
Hand Gable Grip over Op’s left arm.
Roll your arms to the right to move Op’s chest and allow your left leg to slip around to closed guard.

Or…

You have Op in Half Guard,
Op has his right hip tight to the ground.
Hip escape right and place your right foot under Op’s left leg.
Left hand grabs Op’s gi near his right knee.
Right hand grabs Op’s belt at his back (or gi nearby).
Hip escape back under Op and lift Op’s bottom half with your right foot.
Drop him into your Closed Guard.
