- demand for cotton increased making more states produce it (cotton got cheaper)

slaveholders became more defensive, non slaveholders became more critical of slavery

- 250,000 free (emancipated during revolutionary war or was born to white owner and granted freedom)
- remained in south because they wouldn’t receive equal rights anywhere even though it was dangerous with the chance of getting recaptured.

- were nomadic hunter who followed buffalo
the west: the frontier
- concept of new things to discover always moving
- promise for greater freedom (white settlers)
- mountain men: guides further west
- women’s rights and jobs more equal
- environmental changes (destroyed everything on the way further west)
