Age of Jackson (1829-1837)

Jackson v. Adams (election of 1824)
four democratic republican candidates - Adams, Clay, Crawford, and Jackson
Jackson won popular vote but lost electoral due to the four way split
Clay gave his votes to Adams in House vote
Tariffs of abomination
The Tariff of 1828 was a very high protective tariff that became law in the United States on May 19, 1828. It was a bill designed to fail in Congress because it was seen by free trade supporters as hurting both industry and farming, but it passed anyway. The bill was vehemently denounced in the South and escalated to a threat of civil war in the Nullification Crisis of 1832–33.

The scandal occurred between 1829 and 1831 and involved multiple members of Jackson’s cabinet and their wives. Jackson took the side of a poor women and gained a lot of votes
Indian Removal Act (1830)
- democracy did not expand to native Americans
- forced native to leave homes to west of Mississippi
Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1830)
Worcester v. Georgia (1832)
ruled state had no force within native territory
Trail of tears
natives forced to move west on terrible journey. 15,000 Cherokee forced to move, 4000 died
Nullification crisis
theory- each state had right to follow federal law
- any state could defy or leave union
- nullifying tariffs
- not extended democracy to blacks
Bank veto
This bill passed Congress, but Jackson vetoed it, declaring that the Bank was “unauthorized by the Constitution, subversive to the rights of States, and dangerous to the liberties of the people.” After his reelection, Jackson announced that the Government would no longer deposit Federal funds with the Bank
