Part 2 - Salvation Flashcards
What are the three most important covenants revealed in the Bible?
The covenant of works, the Covenant of Redemption, and the Covenant of Grace.
What is a covenant?
A covenant is an agreement between two or more persons.
With whom did God make the Covenant of Works?
With Adam.
Did Adam act for himself alone in the Covenant of Works?
No. He represented the whole human race.
What was Adam bound to do by the Covenant of Works?
To obey God perfectly.
What did God promise in the Covenant of Works?
To reward Adam with life if he obeyed Him.
What did God threaten in the Covenant of Works?
To punish Adam with death if he disobeyed.
Did Adam keep the Covenant of Works?
No, he sinned against God.
What effect did this sin have on all people?
We are all born guilty and sinful.
Can anyone be saved through the Covenant of Works?
No, none can be saved through the Covenant of Works.
Why can none be saved through the Covenant of Works?
Because all have broken it, and deserve the punishment of death.
With whom did God the Father make the Covenant of Redemption?
With His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
What did God promise in the Covenant of Redemption?
To set aside a people to be Christ’s own forever.
What did Christ promise in the Covenant of Redemption?
To come into the world as a man, and to live in perfect obedience to the will of God the Father, even unto death on a cross.
Why did Christ need to come into the world as a man?
So that he would be descended from Adam.
Why did Christ need to live in perfect obedience to the will of God?
So that the Covenant of Works would be fulfilled.
Did our Lord Jesus Christ ever commit the least sin?
No, He lived a sinless life.
Why did Christ need to suffer death on a cross?
To satisfy divine justice, by paying the penalty due for sin.
What do we call Christ’s suffering and death in the place of sinners?
The atonement.
What did the Holy Spirit promise in the Covenant of Redemption?
To empower Christ to carry out his ministry on earth, and to do the work of regeneration in the hearts of those who belong to Christ.
What is the Covenant of Grace?
The agreement God the Father has made regarding those who belong to Christ.
What does God the Father promise in the Covenant of Grace?
To justify and sanctify all those for whom Christ died.
What is justification?
It is God forgiving sinners and treating them as if they had never sinned.
What is sanctification?
It is God making sinners holy in heart and conduct.
What is required of those who enter into the Covenant of Grace?
To repent of their sins and believe in Christ.
What does it mean to repent?
To admit that I am sinful, and to hate that sin and forsake it, because it is displeasing to God.
What does it mean to believe in Christ?
To believe that Jesus was the Son of God, and that he paid the penalty for my sins so that I may be with God forever.
Is there any other way to be saved?
No. I can do nothing to deserve salvation.
Can you repent and believe in Christ by your own power?
No. I cannot repent and believe unless the Holy Spirit changes my heart.
How can you get the help of the Holy Spirit?
God has told us to pray for the Holy Spirit’s help.
How long ago did Christ die?
About two thousand years ago.
How were sinners saved before Christ came?
By believing in the promised Messiah.
Before Christ came, how did believers show their faith?
By offering the sacrifices God required.
What did these sacrifices represent?
Christ, the Lamb of God, who would come to die for sinners.
What does Christ do for his people?
He does the work of a prophet, a priest, and a king.
How is Christ a prophet?
He teaches us the will of God.
How is Christ a priest?
He died for our sins and pleads with God for us.
How is Christ a king?
He rules over us and defends us.
Why do you need Christ as a prophet?
Because my sinful nature makes me ignorant.
Why do you need Christ as a priest?
Because I am guilty of breaking God’s law.
Why do you need Christ as a king?
Because I am weak and helpless, and my enemy, the devil, is always waiting to attack.
