part 2 Flashcards
Why is dislocation an orthopedic emergency?
- due to possible vascular injury
- unreduced = increased risk for avascular necrosis
- risk for compartment syndrome
During a dislocation which is a vascular emergency What type of assessment needs to be done?
neuromuscular assessment
-6 P’s
When the pt has a dislocation and the Dr realigns what is a priority afterward?
immobilize to allow torn ligaments and surrounding tissue to heal
-brace, splint, or sling
Once a pt has had a dislocation they are at a risk of a repeated dislocation what is important to teach the pt about this topic?
activity restrictions
What is a closed reduction?
fixing the break without opening the skin
-not necessarily a surgery
What is an open reduction?
-the Dr. surgically open up the pt and fixes the break
What are some fracture immobilization devices?
- cast
- sling
- body jacket
- brace
- hip spica cast (double or single)
- knee immobilizer
- metal pins and rods
- applies traction
- compresses fracture fragments
- immobilizes and holds fracture fragments in place
external fixation
What is electric bone growth stimulation?
- used for tx of fractures
- facilitates healing process
- increases calcium uptake
- activates intracellular calcium stores
- increases bone growth factor production
- non, semi, and invasive methods
What types of medications are involved with fractures?
- central and peripheral muscle relaxants
- tDap due to increased risk of tetanus (esp with open fracture)
- bone penetrating antibiotics
