Caused by constipation and may result from a mixture of feces and nondigestible hair or bones
Fecal impaction
A massage technique consisting of uniform pressure with light or heavy stroking. For a sedative effect, a light stroke rate of 15 strokes/min is used
Effleurage
Also known as kneading or compression. Used to enhance circulation and stretch muscles, tendons, adhesions, and contractures.
Petrissage massage
Abnormal shortenings of muscle tissue
Contractures
A massage technique that moves skin over underlying tissue in small, circular, rhythmic motions to help the body absorb local effusion and loosen superficial scar tissue and adhesions
Friction massage
PT for animals that are paralyzed, very weak or have fractures to prevent joint freezing and disuse muscle atrophy. Each affected joint is pot through normal ROM and involves no activity on the part of the animal
Passive exercise
PT that causes voluntary muscle contraction by the animal. Examples include walking and swimming. Some animals may require stimulation devices and support.
Active exercise
PT using cold packs, cold water or ice. It’s best to apply within 24-72 hours of injury to reduce pain, edema, and muscle spasm
Cold therapy
PT using heat to I create tissue temp which results in vasodialation
