part 2 Flashcards
valves of the heart open and close in response to
pressure changes as the heart contracts and relaxes
(tricuspid &
bicuspid
Right and left atrioventricular valves
Right and left atrioventricular valves prevent
back flow from the ventricles into the atria
Prevent back flow from the arteries into the
ventricles
Right and left semilunar valves (pulmonary & aortic)
When one set of valves is open,
the other set is closed
Blood flow through coronary
arteries deliver
oxygenated
blood and nutrients to the
myocardium
o Branches arise from the
ascending aorta
Coronary veins remove
carbon dioxide and wastes
from the myocardium
Branches converge at the
coronary sinus
Myocardial Ischemia
Reduced blood flow to the
myocardium
o Can cause hypoxia
(reduced oxygen supply)
and angina pectoris
(severe pain in the
chest) and pain in the
neck, chin, left arm and
elbow
Myocardial Infarction
- Heart attack
o Infarction refers to death
of tissues due to
interrupted blood supply
o Treatments include
thrombolytic injection,
coronary angioplasty or
coronary artery bypass
grafting
Cardiac muscle cells are self-excitable, and therefore,
autorhythmic
- Cardiac muscle cells repeatedly generate spontaneous action
potentials that then trigger
heart contractions
Cardiac muscle cells form the conduction system,
which is the route
for propagating action potentials through the heart muscle
