Part 1 Flashcards
The heart is located in the
mediastinum
pericardium is where the heart is
enclosed and held in place
The serous pericardium has 2 layers:
- Visceral
- Parietal
outer fibrous
pericardium and an inner serous pericardium
- Visceral
- Parietal
The visceral and parietal
layers are separated by
the serous cavity
a fluid filled space
The wall of the heart has 3
layers:
- Epicardium
- Myocardium
- Endocardium
Pericarditis:inflammation of the
pericardium, two types
Acute pericarditis begins
suddenly, no known
cause, sometimes linked
to viral infection
o Chronic pericarditis
begins gradually and
involves a build-up of fluid
around the pericardium
- Myocarditis
Inflammation of the
myocardium, usually a
complication of a viral
infection
Endocarditis
inflammation of the
endocardium, typically due
to bacteria, and usually
involves the heart values
receives blood from the superior and
inferior vena cava and the coronary sinus
right atrium
The right ventricle
receives blood from the right atrium
and sends blood to the lungs
The left atrium
receives blood from the pulmonary veins
receives blood from the left atrium and
sends blood all over the body.
Note that the wall of the left ventricle is much
thicker than that of the right ventricle
