Disorders: Homeostatic Imbalances Flashcards
Disorders
- Coronary artery disease
- Congenital heart defects
- Arrhythmia
- Congestive heart failure
Coronary artery disease -
-caused by plaque buildup in the wall of
the arteries that supply blood to the heart (coronary arteries). Plaque is made up of cholesterol deposits. Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time. This process is called
atherosclerosis
Congenital heart defects -
most common types of birth defects.
Symptoms include abnormal heart rhythms, blue-tinted skin, shortness of breath, failure to feed or develop normally, and swollen body tissue or organs.
Arrhythmia
electrical impulses in the heart don’t work properly.
Congestive Heart Failure -
when the heart muscle doesn’t pump
blood as well as it should. When this happens, blood often backs up and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath
