What is Clear Ice?
Forms when large rain drops or freezing rain strike the aircraft surface and slowly freeze. THIS IS THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPE OF ICE SINCE IT IS CLEAR, HARD TO SEE, AND CAN CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THE AIRFOIL.
What is Rime Ice?
Small drops strike the aircraft and freeze immediately on contact with the aircraft surface. This type of ice usually forms on areas such as the leading edges of wings or struts, has a somewhat rough-looking appearance and a milky white color.
What is mixed ice?
A mixture of clear and rime ice. it has the bad characteristics of both types and can form rapidly. Ice particles become embedded in clear ice, building a very rough accumulation.
What is frost?
Ice crystal deposits formed by sublimation when the temperature at the surface is below the dew point, and the dew point is below freezing.
