Part 1 starting from burns Flashcards
Distinguish between the 3 classes of burns.
1) Superficial burns(1st degree) : Confined to epidermis Produces erythema and discomfort Heals in 3-5 days
2)Superficial partial thickness (2nd degree)-Upper level of dermis Characterized by blisters, red, weepy, thin eschar, severe pain
Deep partial thickness- Lower dermis Absence of blisters, sometimes moderate thickness eschar, white, less weepy Superficial nerve endings damaged
3) Full thickness (3rd degree)- Epidermis and dermis destroyed – White, yellow, brown – No pain – Thick, inelastic eschar – Grafting necessary

What is Herpes zoster (shingles) Caused by?
varicella-zoster virus
Herpes zoaster signs and symptoms
Chickenpox is the initial infection with the virus and shingles is the reemergence
Creates painful sores resembling those of chickenpox
Contrast a hypertrophic scar to a keloid.-
Keloid- The tissue extends beyond the borders of the original wound More haphazard organization of collagen fibers Tends to recur after excision
Hypertrophic- Remain within boundaries of wound Collagen synthesis > normal skin Collagen aligned in whorls Decreased tensile strength
