parkinson's disease Flashcards
a slow progessive degenerative disorder that eventually leads to disability
parkinson’s disease
parkinson’s disease has a decrease or increase in what
decrease in dopamine
affects the extra pyramidal system (EPS) which causes a decrease in production of dopamine
parkinson’s disease
cause of parkinson’s disease
viral parkinsonism
exposure to methyl phenyl tetrahydropyridine
aluminum theory
boxes pugilistica
virus causing viral parkinsonism
kuru virus
basal ganglia injury/subctantia nigra injury
boxes pugilistica
what is dying in parkinson’s disease
dopaminergic neuron
exposure/prolonged exposure of a person from aluminum
aluminum theory
common symptom in parkinson’s disease
resting tremor (pill rolling - imrpoves with purposeful movement)
uncommon symptom in parkinson
intentional tremor
signs and symptoms in parkinson
bradykinesia
rigidity
mask like face (no expression)
SHUFFLING GAIT
monotonous speech
microphagia (handwritting progressively gets smaller)
resting tremor
priority nursing mgmt in parkinson
SAFETY
nursing mgmt in parkinson
- teach in diet modification (thickened liquid to soft diet, finger foods)
*prone to constipation, give high fiber diet (green leafy vegetables, banana, oatmeal) - lift feet while walking (use flat shoes w rubber soles)
- use high seated chair
- provide safety with independence to protect the ego
- use shirts without buttons
- use shoes with no laces (slip-ons)
- increase fluid and fiber intake to prevent contipation
- use firm bed to avoid contractures
what drug don’t we give in parkinson and why?
dopamine synthetic drug
- can cross the blood barrier
pharmacological drugs in parkinson
anticholonergic drugs
dopaminergic drugs
dopamine agonist/antiviral drugs
dopaminergic drugs in parkinson
LEVODOPA
CARBIDOPA with LEVODOPA (Sinimet)
(promotes muscle flexibility)
what causes destruction of 99% of carbidopa and what do we give
dopa decarboxylase causes the destruction
give CARBIDOPA
what anticholinergic drug is usually given
cogentin (trihexiphenidyl)
reduce the muscle rigidity and tremors of parkinson’s disease
anticholinergic drugs
anticholinergic drugs
cogentin (thprihexiohenidyl)
akineton (benztropine)
kemadrin (biperiden)
parsidol (ethopropazine)
norflex (orphenadrine)
nursing mgmt in parkinson
low protein diet
no to what in parkinson
no to TYRAMIN (smoked + protein)
no to PYRIDOXINE rich foods (smoked foods)
no to MAOI (Monoamine oxidase inhibitor)
yes to what in parkinson
ALDOMET (Methyldopa)
acts on the dopamine receptors and produce movement in symptoms of parkinsonism
dopamine agonist/antiviral drugs
dopamine agonist/antiviral drugs
amantadine HCl (SYMMETREL)
bromocriptine mesylate (PARIODEL)
requip (ROPONIZOLE)
