What is Parkinson’s?
degenerative movement disorder caused by reduction in dopamine in substantial nigra in basal ganglia
What causes Parkinson’s?
Idiopathic, drugs, environmental, genetics
What is the presentation of Parkinson’s?
resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, forward posture, reduced arm swing, shuffling gait
What is the difference between a Parkinson’s tremor and a benign essential tremor?
Parkinson’s is asymmetrical, worse at rest, has other Parkinson’s features and doesn’t change with alcohol
How to diagnose Parkinson’s?
Made based on clinical findings, response to levodopa
Treatment of Parkinson’s?
Dopamine agonist (ropinirole)
L-dopa/ Levodopa (can cause end-dose fading)
MOA-B inhibitors (selegiline)
