What is MS?
chronic progressive condition that involves demyelination of myelinated neurones in CNS. Oligodendrocytes are targeted.
What causes MS?
genetics, EBV, low vitamin D, smoking, obesity
What are the signs and symptoms of MS?
optic neuritis, Uhtoff’s phenomenon (symptoms worse in the heat), Lhermitte’s Sogn (electric shock sensation), trigeminal neuralgia, paraesthesia, incontinecne, Bell’s palsy, limb paralysis, spasticity, weakness
What are the sub-types of MS?
Relapsing-remitting
Primary progressive
Secondary progressive
How to diagnose MS?
MRI (lesions)
Lumbar puncture: oligoclonal bands in CSF
Visual evoked Potentials
How to manage MS?
MDT, disease modifying drugs (baclofen, betaferon) and biological therapy, relapses (methylprednisolone)
