Q

What is neglectful parenting?

A

Neither demanding or responsive

Like Permissive: have few (inconsistent) rules – overall provide very little structure.
Like Authoritarian: distant, cold relationships with their child.
Absence = all kinds of interaction minimised.
Parenting requires constant focus on the child – neglectful parents find this impossible.
Factors include poor mental health, substance abuse, extreme economic insecurity.

16
Q

What are the effects of neglectful parenting?

A

Harmful across all domains: lower academic/career achievements, low self-esteem, higher internalizing and externalizing behaviors, poor social competence, peer rejection, and poor physical health (particularly weight gain).

17
Q

How do the effects of neglectful parenting vary across cultures?

A

The negative effects of neglectful parenting are likely to be consistent across all cultures.

18
Q

What are the three dimensions in parenting?

A

Parental warmth (comfort)

Parental autonomy and support (encouraging child’s initiative)

Parental structure (expectations set of child).

19
Q

How is flourishing created?

A

Satisfying basic psychological needs brings well-being.

Good parenting starts this process.

20
Q

What is SDT?

A

self determination theory

Autonomy = the capacity to make choices.
Competence = the practical ability to function.
Relatedness = the sense of connection to others.
Balance is essential because all our needs conflict.
SDT can be applied to any culture, because the balance between the three needs can vary.
Good parenting promotes the child’s development of these basic needs.

21
Q

What are the two main factors contributing to intensive parenting?

A

Smaller families allowing more time and attention per child
2) Perceived increased competition and uncertainty encouraging more parental investment

22
Q

How does economic inequality and insecurity affect parenting?

A

Parental structure tends to be high when economic equality and security are low, as parents worry about their child’s future economic success.

23
Q

What does Baumrind’s theory suggest about intensive parenting?

A

It suggests that high demandingness and high responsiveness (Dependable parenting) are best, implying that parenting cannot be too intensive.

24
Q

How does the dimensional approach differ from Baumrind’s theory?

A

It suggests that excess in parenting can be harmful, emphasizing balance (e.g., Self-Determination Theory).

25
Q

What are potential negative aspects of intensive parenting according to the dimensional approach?

A

Too much structure can smother autonomy; intensive parents can be high in both positive (Autonomy, Warmth) and negative (Control, Rejection) dimensions.

26
Q

When do intensive parents tend to show Autonomy and Warmth?

A

Typically only when the child succeeds.

27
Q

What is helicopter parenting?

A

similar to dependable paretning - high in responsiveness and demandingness but…
- hyperinvolved, overprotective
undermines child independence

thus creating adolescents that are low in autonomy and competence.

28
Q

What is tiger parenting?

A

high in responsiveness and damandingness.

emphasize academic achievemenrt over socio-emotional development

high in warmth and rejection.

very warm if succeeding and very cold if you are failing.

both helicopter and tiger parenting are both forms of intensive parenting.
