What is in TPN/TNA? (7)
Proteins, carbohydrates (sugars), fats, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and fluids.
Some reasons why you would have to use TPN?
-After gut surgery
-Severe burns
-Nutritional requirement for growth & maturation
-Extensive bowel surgery
-Nutritional requirements for low-birth
-Substitute for enteral feeding
Where and why is Total Parenteral Nutrition given?
Through the central vein for long-term, complete nutrition
Where and why is peripheral Parenteral Nutrition (PPN) given?
Through a peripheral vein, used for short term or partial nutritional support
Where and why is Partial Parenteral Nutrition given?
Supplements oral or enteral feeding, delivered via central or peripheral access
What is the ratio for Alligation method simplified?
1:4
What is Basal Energy Expenditure? (BEE)
The amount of energy required to maintain the body’s normal metabolic activity (respiration, maintenance of body temp)
What is the Resting Energy Expenditure? (REE)
The amount of energy required to meet the metabolic demands of various degrees of stress in excess of the BEE
What is the calculation for REE?
REE = BEE x stress factor
What are some examples of stress factors?
Starvation, Post-elective surgery with no complications (out of bed), Moderate stress ( chronic illness), Severe stress.
