Paré Flashcards
How were gunshot wounds treated before Paré and why?
Gunshots were treated with boiling oil because they thought that the wounds were poisonous and that the only way to stop it spreading was to burn it off.
Why did Paré not use boiling oil one day to treat his patients and what were the results?
Paré ran out of oil so instead mixed together rose oil, egg yolk and turpentine into a paste and put it on the wounds. That night, Paré was worried he might have made their wound worse and couldn’t sleep so got up to check on his patients. The patients who had been treated with the oil were all awake and crying out in pain and the patients who had been treated with the paste instead of oil were fast asleep in a lot less pain.
How did surgeons stop bleeding before Paré? What did Paré do? What were the problems with Paré’s method?
Surgeons before Paré stop bleeding by cauterising the wounds.
Paré thought that thre must be a better way that did not cause people so much pain. So to stop bleeding, he would tie off the blood vessels with silk threads called ligatures
Surgeons did not know about the germs in the air and it was not very popular
