Parathyroid Gland Flashcards
Hyperparathyroidism
Signalment
Primary- dogs with keeshonds being overrepresented
Hyperparathyroidism
Pathophysiology
Abnormal increase in functional parathyroid tissue - usually benign
Primary or secondary to renal disease
Hyperparathyroidism
Clinical signs/Physical exam
PU/PD, wt loss, lethargy
Hyperparathyroidism
Diagnostics
Ca and iCa increased
Testing to exclude other causes of hypercalcemia (LSA, anal sac tumor, renal failure)
PTH levels increased
Cervical ultrasound
Biopsy
Hyperparathyroidism
Treatment
IVF, corticosteroids to promote calciuresis
Surgery or Percutaneous ablation
Hyperparathyroidism
Prognosis
Good to excellent
Hypoparathyroidism
Pathophysiology
Immune-mediated
Loss of functional parathyroid tissue
May be secondary to accidental removal or damage during thyroid surgery
Hypoparathyroidism
Signalment
Dog
Toy poodle
Hypoparathyroidism
Clinical signs/Physical exam
Due to hypocalcemia
Weakness, lethargy, muscle fascinations, seizures
Hypoparathyroidism
Diagnostics
Decreased Ca and iCa levels
PTH levels decreased
Hypoparathyroidism
Treatment
Ca administration with ECG to monitor for arrhythmias
Oral Ca and calcitriol at home
Hypoparathyroidism
Prognosis
Good to excellent with normal survival times
