Parasympathetic Flashcards
What two pathways produce a visceral effect?
Sympathetic & Parasympathetic
The parasympathetic nervous system has a ________ preganglionic neuron and a _________ postganglionic neuron.
long
short
The ganglion and postganglionic neuron of the parasympathetic nucleus is described as intramural. What does that mean?
Lives within the walls of the organ
The nuclei of the parasympathetic system live where?
the brain stem
The nuclei of the sympathetic nervous system live where?
live in the thoracolumbar portion of the spinal cord
What are the two neurotransmitters shown on the diagram?
Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine
What is the main parasympathetic nerve?
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
Cranial nerves III, VII, IX are found where in the body
Covered with the head
CN X (vagus nerve) courses through where?
Thoracic and abdominal organs
What is the preganglionic pathway of the parasympathetic nucleus of the vagus nerve?
Vagus nerve goes through the neck and is closely related with the sympathetic trunk. Then it combines with the sympathetic trunk to make the vagosympathetic trunk. Once in the thorax, the vagus separates from vagosympathetic trunk and runs on right and left sides. Then different vagal branches such as the cardiac nerves innervate the heart and lungs.
Recurrent laryngeal nerves innervate cervical organs such as?
Esophagus, trachea, and larynx
***Also carries GSE & GSA fibers and is the main motor nerve for the skeletal muscles of the larynx
The vagus nerve separates from the vagosympathetic trunk once it passes what structure?
The thoracic inlet
What is the ? Pointing at
The vagus nerve
