Parasites in Kingdom Animalia: The Cestodes(Tapeworms) Flashcards
Taenia saginata
* Taenia species,ova * Taenia species,gravid proglottid * Taenia species, scolex * Taenia species, mature proglottid
disease: Beef tapeworm disease
symptoms: may cause diarrhea or intestinal obstruction , damage to mucous membrane, anorexia, weight loss, and verminous intoxication(absorption of worms waste products) with dizziness, abdominal pain,headache, and nausea. some cases asymptomatic.
Taenia solium
pork but humans can also act as the intermediate host if eggs are ingested from human feces;
disease: Pork tapeworm disease
symptoms: Similar to beef tapeworm. However, in the case of cysticercosis, damage occurs as result of inflammatory response after cysticerci die. The extent and type of damage depends on where the larvae lodge; if in the eyeball, blindness ensues, if in the brain it is epileptic convulsions. They are common in skin and even bone, but they are not common in muscle tissue.
Hymenolepis nana
*Hymenolepis nana,ova
disease: Dwarf tapeworm disease
symptoms: If present in large numbers they can cause toxemia, diarrhea, and insomnia. Symptoms are aggravated if host is protein-deficient.
Echinococcus granulosus
* Echinococcus granulosus hydatid sand larva * Echinococcus granulosus whole
disease: Echinococcosus,hydatid cyst disease
symptoms: After eggs are ingested, they develop into larvae that migrate to the liver or elsewhere—even in bone. A fluid-filled cyst develops, in which larvae multiply asexually. The liver enlarges slowly (or other tissue or organ is affected), as the cysts take up to 20 years to develop; in the liver, a cyst can reach a volume of 15 liters! The fluid inside the cyst is proteinaceous and can cause anaphylactic shock if the cyst ruptures, so the fluid must be aspirated before surgically removing cysts. Larvae from ruptured cysts can undergo metastasis, migrating to other parts of the body.
Diphyllobothrium latum
* Diphyllobothrium latum,ova * Diphyllobothrium latum scolex
disease: Fish tapeworm disease
symptoms: Tapeworm may obstruct intestine and take vitamin B-12 from host; this may result in pernicious anemia. May also develop toxemia from metabolic by-products of worms. Sometimes asymptomatic.
