What are paragraphs?

A

Paragraphs are the building blocks or writing compositions and essays and are often defined as having a certain number of sentences with a beginning, middle and end. Paragraphs need unity and so MUST express ONE main idea.

A
  • is usually the first sentence in a paragraph
  • it is introductory meaning it should just INTRODUCE the main idea
  • it should not include details

What are the paragraph rules?

A
  1. Indent the first word in a paragraph
  2. Start a paragraph with a topic sentence which states the main idea of that paragraph
  3. If you begin writing about a new idea, put it in a new paragraph
  4. Paragraphs must answer questions on a certain topic.
