Exposition Writing Flashcards
What is exposition?
Exposition is used to define, inform, teach or explain a concept.
What are some examples of exposition?
Examples of exposition are newspapers, essays, magazines, manuals and textbooks.
What are the types of exposition?
Definition, Process Explanation, Division/ Classification, Cause/ Effect, Problem Solution, Compare/ Contrast
What is definition?
Definition is an in-depth explanation and commentary on what either a word, concept or term means. These essays may be based on a person’s opinion or their own perspective of the meaning. Keyword: perspective
What is process explanation?
Process explanation provides systematic information that can be used to instruct or inform about a procedure. It emphasizes how something is done rather than why it is done and therefore must be presented in a chronological order. Keyword: systematic
What is division/ classification?
Division/ classification are useful methods of organizing and explaining information. This helps in creating logical categories in your essay and helps the reader to process information in a much more understandable way. Division separates a single subject into subunits without invoking any specific organization. Eg (of division) parts of the body. Classification is when you select relevant categories of a topic that are logically and carefully set out. If a category is chosen then you must have at least three reasons to support that category chosen based on the topic. Eg. (of classification) “major tourist attractions in Barbados” such as sea sports, sightseeing and night life. Keyword: groupings
What is cause/ effect?
A cause and effect essay is a common method of organizing ideas. It is the approach you use when discussing the relationships between one thing and another. It addresses the question of why an event happens (cause) and result of that event happening (effect). Keyword: relationship
What is compare/ contrast?
The words compare and contrast are often used interchangeably. When you compare, you emphasize the similarities between two or more people. When you contrast, you emphasize differences. Keywords: similarities and differences
What is problem/ solution?
Problem-solution essays consider the problems of a particular situation and give solutions to those problems. They are a bit similar to cause and effect essays especially in terms of structure. The main thing is that problems are pointed out and possible solutions follow.
