Furthermore, this notion of sacrifice is used by both Shakespeare and Kyoka to create this dilemma regarding whether a sacrifice is noble or weak, and whether sacrifice is a necessary part of life. [LINK TO QUESTION].

At the end of Othello, as Desdemona is dying after being killed by Othello, Shakespeare portrays sacrifice through Desdemoa stating “Nobody. I myself” in response to being asked who caused her death. Through this sacrifice, Shakespeare poses the question as to whether Desdemona dies with strength or weakness.

The possibility of this sacrifice being weak echoes Shakespeare’s portrayal of the duality of the feminine, with Desdemona in her “divided duty”, choosing to protect her “husband” over herself, reinforcing the suggestion that a person can show only strength or weakness at any time, but never both. However, in relation to Shakespeare’ description of Desdemona as Othello’s “captain”, this sacrifice could be seen as noble and a display of true strength, sacrificing herself to save her husband.

In addition to Desdemona’s sacrifice, Shakespeare uses Othello’s suicide to present similar ideas about sacrifice and [LINK TO QUESTION]. There is some ambiguity in whether Othello’s suicide was a sacrifice at all, as it appears to be his belief that “in [his] sense, ‘tis happiness to die”, suggesting that his suicide was more of a return to the strength and hubris that he possessed prior to his terrible downfall.

Through this, we can once again see the greater nobility and apparent superiority of Desdemona to Othello that was previously seen in Shakespeare’s description of her as Othello’s “captain” as, whilst Othello’s sacrifice was seemingly selfish, Desdemona’s sacrifice is presented to be in service to her “husband”. Therefore, similarly to/opposing Kyoka, Shakespeare suggests [IDEA ABOUT QUESTION].
