Paragraph 1 = suffragist movement Flashcards
Knowledge
(NUWSS) Created in 1897 by millicent faucet
The aim of this newly founded organisation was to gain the vote towards working class and middle class women
The NUWSS used peaceful and calm methods to gain this vote such as the mud march peaceful demonstration that occurred in London in 1907, this was the largest public outing by the suffragist movement as 3000 women marched in Hyde park
This demonstration gave the movement more publicity in a week than it had done in 50 year
analysis
Meetings and demonstrations were were very vital to getting the cause of the suffragists to be recognised this was a successful nationwide campaign to raise awareness about challenging the perspective on women being independent
by 1914 the membership of the suffragists was at 53000 which suggests their campaign was very important for women gaining the vote
analysis +
however many historians have argued that their campaign was tedious and slow moving- they were easily ignored by the press.
Evaluation
by talking to mps directly this allowed women to persuade them directly that they were inteligent and deserving of the vote.
some liberal mps also backed giving women the vote to ensure another party did not do it first, and then gain womens support
