para 4 - changing attitudes towards women Flashcards
introduction
in the late 19th century the traditional views on women were starting to change as the world started to modernise women gained more freedom compared to the traditional values they used to face for example they gained the choice to divorce their husband
Women were able to attend university and study courses for example 1870 girton college was set up for 1879 in cambridge and oxford setup colleges for women.
analysis
With more freedom in their marriages women were able to have more autonomy over their lives and make more decisions
it was important that women could gain entry into jobs that were previously male dominated as it proved they were responsible for gaining the vote
analysis +
unfortunately some women were not able to divorce their husbands due to economic reasons- they were financially trapped
there was difficulties for women in professional occupations as the marriage bar still applied which forced women to leave their jobs once they married ultimately some universities would allow to complete the degree but the woman would not be able to graduate
evaluation
t is evident that these laws did give women an improvement in status however as Harold Baker showed in 1912 the number of women actually involved in local government remained very small which demonstrates that whilst they were moving forward, women still lacked influence over all.
