Paper Chromatography Flashcards
What is Chromatography?
Chromatography is another method used by chemists to separate out mixtures.
What is it used to seperate?
Dyes e.g. inks paints food colourings
How does chromatography work
It works because different dyes will move up the paper at different rates
What does the distance always depend on
The distance travelled always depends on the solvent and type of paper you use
How to calculate the Rf
Distance travelled by solute
_____________________________
Distance travelled by solvent
What is the final dried up final product called?
Chromotogram
Why do some solutes go higher than others
They would be more soluble and the ones that are lower might be attracted to the paper a bit or just less soluble
What are the different dots
Each one is a different substance.
What can you not do to the dot on the baseline and why
Do not submerge them as it could result in it dissolving into the liquid
What is the mobile phase
The mobile phase is the molecules that can move Liquid or gas. SOLVENT
What is the Stationary phase
The molecules that cannot move. Sold Thick liquid. PAPER
