paper & board Flashcards
(15 cards)
cartridge paper aesthetics, cost + weight, uses
A: Thick white paper with lightly textured surface

bleed proof paper
A: Coated white, can be textured or smooth, thick paper
C: 70gsm, coated to stop ink from bleeding through
U: Used with marker pens for presentations
grid paper
A: white paper with printed grid lines (squares, isometric)
C: 80gsm, lines are usually faint to make pencil easy to see.
U: Used in graphical, scientific and mathematical diagrams, scale drawings
layout paper
A: Off white, slightly transparent with a smooth finish, thin
C: 40-60gsm, takes pencil and other media well
U: Sketching and tracing, general design work, particularly sketching
tracing paper
A: Off white, very transparent, thin
C: 40-120gsm, less transparent the higher the gsm
U: copying/tracing images
corrugated cardboard
A: Natural brown colour, 2 or more layers of card bonded together, with a fluted layer in between to add strength and rigidity
C: 1000-5000 microns, strong, lightweight, rigid, can be printed on
U: Packaging, boxes, impact protection, protect from damage (secondary packaging)
duplex board
A: two layers of card bonded together, usually different texture and colour on each side
C: 200-500gsm. Stiff, lightweight. Coating protects the card, cheaper than white card
U: Packaging boxes, especially for food and drinks, that requires printing on one side, only one surface seen so only one needs to be smooth for printing
foil lined board
A: white card with laminated aluminium foil lined on one side to provide insulation
C: 200-400gsm, the foil regulates the temperature
U: takeaway food packaging, foil keeps flavour in and air and moisture out
foam core board
A: smooth paper surface with foam inner core, thin layers of card
C: 3-10mm thick, lightweight, and rigid
U: architectural models, point of sale displays, mounting pictures

grams per square metre
ink jet card
A: smooth, treated card for a high-quality, bleed-proof finish, allows for printed image to be sharply defined and high quality
U: high-quality photographs, ink jet printing
when does card become board
