What are paper and boards usually made out of?
wood pulp, which is a mixture of cellulose fibres (finely shredded wood) and 99% water
What can cellulose fibres be made from
Hemp, flax, bamboo, sugarcane, straw
Bleed proof paper
80-140 gsm
Bright white, smooth surface, stops marker bleeds. used for drawing with marker pens
Cartridge paper
80-140 gsm
Textured surface, cream colour
Drawing with pencil crayons, pastels, inks and gouache
Grid paper
80gsm paper with printed grid of squares - the lines are feint for drawing over. Used for scientific/mathematical diagrams
Layout paper
50 gsm
Thin, slightly transparent, inexpensive
Sketching+developing designs, tracing parts of designs
Tracing paper
Takes pencil and most colours well, used for copying and tracing images, working drawings and overlays for desgin adaptations

easy to cut, fold, print onto

Corrugated cardboard
3000 + gsm
Lightweight but strong, difficult to fold, good heat insulator
Pizza boxes, shoe boxes, larger product packaging
Foam Board
Very lightweight, easy to cut, smooth
architectural modelling, model making
Duplex board
Stiff, lightweight, waxy coating
