Energy generation Flashcards
How is energy generated from: turbines and generators
fossil fuels are commonly burned to create heat, which heats the water. Water turns into steams which rotates turbine which is linked to a generator and produces electricity
What are fossil fuels
finite resources
examples of fossil fuels
natural gas, coal, oil
advantages of fossil fuels
cheap and reliable source of energy
disadvantages of fossil fuels
non renewable and therefore unsustainable
contributes to global warming - high amounts of carbon
what is shale gas
natural gas trapped in the earth’s crust
how do nuclear power plants generate energy
by a process called fission: the splitting of uranium in a nuclear reactor
advantages of nuclear power
clean and effecient, doesnt contribute to global warming
disadvantages of nuclear power
the waste material is radioactive and dangerous to life
explain similarities between wind energy and fossil fuel energy [3]
fossil fuels are burnt to heat water and the resulting steam turns the turbines, which turns generators. wind directly turns the turbines to turn generators.
what kind of energy do wind turbines convert
kinetic energy to electrical energy
how do wind turbines generate energy
the wind causes the blades to turn, turning the whole turbine which turns a generator and produces electricity
