Materials and properties Flashcards
What is a physical property of a material?
How a material behaves under a specific condition
Define: Absorbency
A material’s ability to soak up and retain liquid
Define: Resistance to moisture
A materials ability to prevent liquid and moisture permeating its surface - can be used for waterproof clothing
Define: Density
A material’s mass per unit volume
Define: Fusibility
How easily a material’s state can be altered to become a liquid
Define: Electrical conductivity
How easily electrical energy can pass through a material
Define: Thermal conductivity
How easily heat energy can pass through a material
Define: Working properties
how a material behaves when being worked or shaped
Strength
A material’s ability to withstand a constant force without breaking
Hardness
A material’s ability to withstand scratching, cutting and abrasion
Toughness
A material’s ability to withstand impact from a dynamic force
Malleability
A material’s ability to to be permanently shaped by impact, rolling or pressing without breaking
Ductility
A material’s ability to be drawn or pulled into a long length / wire without breaking
Elasticity
A material’s ability to stretch under force and return back to its original shape without deformation.
