Paper 2- Research Methods Part 4 Flashcards
What are self report techniques ?
Research methods in which participants give information about themselves without researcher interference.
They do this through questionnaires
What are the two types of questions ?
Open and closed
What are the types of interviews ?
Structured
Unstructured
Semi structured
What is a closed question ?
Questions that involve yes or no answers. When they are written the answer option if followed
What are the advantages of a closed question ?
Require minimum effort to answer
Can easily be converted into quantitative data
You can ask questions with finite, clear cut answers
What are the dusting a closed question ?
Create a lack of engagement
Can frustrate participants if their preferred answer is not available
To many questions can cause fatigue
What are the advantages of a open question ?
Allow flexibility to the participants in the way they wish to respond
Good when you don’t know the range of possible answers to put into closed questions
Good way of accessing motivations and feelings
What are open questions ?
Questions which allow participants to answer in their own words.
They are more difficult to analyse but allow freedom of expression and greater depth to answers
What are the disadvantages of open questions ?
More time consuming for participants to answer
They provide a variety of qualitative data which can be difficult to analyse
Participants may not intérprete the question correctly
What is a structured interview ?
The identical closed questions are being read to participants with the interviewer writing down the answers
Easy to conduct
What is an unstructured interview ?
An informal discussion on a particular topic is involved where interviewers can explore interesting answers by asking follow up questions.
Interviews need considerable training and skill to conduct these types of interviews
What are semi structured interviews ?
Involved the combination of structured and unstructured techniques
What are the disadvantages of interviews ?
PARTICIPANT ANSWERS- not suited for people who cannot express their feeling, emotions and opinions, so your never sure if they are telling the truth
ETHICAL ISSUES- participants may not know true purpose
INTERVIEW TRAINING - skill is required to do unstructured interviews due to sensitive topics
INTERVIEW EFFECTS- interviewers May be unconsciously bias.
Also are subject to demand characteristics and social desirability bias
