Paper 1- Unit 3a neutralisation Flashcards
Acid + Alkali –>
Acid + Alkali –> Salt + water
Acid + metal oxide –>
Acid + metal oxide –> salt + water
Acid + Metal carbonate –>
Acid + Metal carbonate –>salt + water + carbon dioxide
Acid + metal –>
Acid + metal –> Salt + Hydrogen
Test for hydrogen
lit splint
goes squeeky pop
Test for carbon dioxide
Lime water
goes clear to cloudy
due to wht ppt formed

What is the pH of a strong acid?
1-2
What is the pH of a weak acid?
3-6
pH neutral
7
What is the pH of a weak alkali?
8-12
What is the pH of a strong alkali?
13-14
Describe how you prepare a salt from a metal oxide or metal carbonate
1) Add named acid into a conical flask
2) Add excess metal oxide/carbonate till it no longer reacts
3) Filter the excess solid and collect the solution
4) Place the filtered solution into an evaporating basin
5) Heat the solution till it reaches saturation point
6) leave the solution over a few days to allow crystals to form
An acid is…
a substance that give H+ ions in water
An alkali is…
a substance that give OH- ions in water
What is the ionic equation for neutralisation?
H+ + OH- –> H2O
Displacement is…
when a more reactive substances
replaces
a less reactive substances in a compound
Displacement of iron oxide
Iron Oxide + Carbon ->
Iron Oxide + Carbon -> Iron + Carbon dioxide
Displacement of copper
Copper sulphate + iron –>
Copper sulphate + iron –> Iron Sulphate + copper
Extraction process for substances more reactive than carbon
Electrolysis
What is electrolysis?
Using electricity
To break down
An ionic substance
Problem with carbon dioxide
it is a green house gas
it causes global warming
Displacement of aluminium oxide
Aluminium oxide + magnesium –>
Aluminium oxide + magnesium –> magnesium oxide + aluminium
What is the name of reaction when an acid or alkali reacts to become neutral?
neutralisation
Name the salt –> Sulphuric acid + sodium hydroxide
sodium sulphate
Name the salt –> hydrochloric acid + copper oxide
copper chloride
Name the salt–> Magnesium + nitric acid
magnesium nitrate
