Paper 1 - The Living World Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An environment of a combination of biotic and abiotic factors that work together in order to survive.
What are some examples of abiotic factors?
Abiotic factors include:
- Weather
- Temperature
- Water
- Sunlight
- Humidity
What is a producer?
An organism that produces its own food, usually deriving its energy from external factors (e.g often sunlight or chemicals near deep ocean vents).
What is a consumer?
An organism that derives its food and energy by consuming producers or other consumers.
What is a decomposer?
An organism that breaks down dead producers or consumers which returns their nutrients to the soil
What is nutrient cycling?
Where nutrients are cycled in a process of being consumed by animals and plants then getting transferred back into the soil by decomposers to be consumed again by animals and plants.
Give an example of a food chain system in a freshwater pond.
An example of a food chain can be:
Algae -> Midge larva -> Great diving beetle -> Carp -> Heron
What is a biome?
A biome is a global-scale ecosystem.
