paper 1 memory definitions Flashcards
coding
the format in which information is stored.
capacity
the amount of information that can be held.
sensory register (SR)
The memory stores for each of the five senses, such as vision(iconic store) and hearing (echoic store).Coding the iconic sensory register is visual, echoic is acousitc. capacity is huge but info lasts less than half a second.
Short-term memory (STM)
a limited capacity memory store. Coding is mainly acoustic. capacity is between 7+/-2 ave.duration is 18 to 30 secs.
Long-term memory (LTM)
a permanent memory store. Coding is mainly semantic (meaning). has unlimited capacity (can store memories for a lifetime.
Multi-store Model (MSM)
A representation of how memory works in terms of three stores called sensory register, STM, LTM. It describes how info is transferred from one store to another, how its remembered + forgotten.
primary effect
the tendency to recall info presented at the start of a list better than info at the middle
Recency effect
the tendency to recall info presented at the end of a list better than the start or middle
working memory model (WMM)
A representation of STM. Suggesting that STM is a dynamic processor of different types of info using sub- units coordinated by a central decision making system.
central executive (CE)
The component of the WMM that co-ordinates the activates of the three subsystems in memory. it also allocates processing resources to those activities.
Phonological loop (PL)
the component of the WMM that processes info in terms of sound.
this includes both written and spoken material. it is divided into the phonological store and the articulatory process.
Visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSS)
the component of the WMM that processes visual and spatial info in a mental space often called “inner eye”
Episodic buffer (EB)
brings together material from other subsystems into a single memory rather than separate strands . also provides a bridge between working memory and LTM.
Dual- task technique.
Methods used to measure the performance of the different slave systems of the WMM whilst participants perform two tasks simultaneously.
