No frame had protected its fragile edges over the years. No place in my scrapbook had been reserved for this photograph. No loving glances had been directed at it on a regular basis…but there was one set of eyes that liked to check on it from time to time;

to retrieve it from its hiding place in the dusky umbra beneath the bed. To find it, I had to dig it out from an ancient, mouldering shoebox that was filled with discarded memories from our childhood; pictures from the first time we met, our holidays and the happy times we spent together.

My hands tremble as I lift the image from the box as if this tiny scrap of paper was a ten ton weight. I lift the photograph up to my face so I could take in it’s scent but not so close that it might be stained by the tears that were now running down my cheeks. On the surface is shows…. But this …. Holds memories of a day that has changed my perspective on life forever.

I carefully, lovingly place the photo back into the box. I glance at it one more time before placing the lid back on and returning the photograph to the darkness. It belongs in the shadows where nobody else can see it because nobody else would truly understand it. It is not simply a photograph; it is a portal to another world. A world that I will forever miss every time my heart beats. The world of our friendship that I will never get back again.

2nd half of para 1

A

Unwanted photographs that didn’t make the grade to be put on display so were shoved away and left and eventually forgotten about. To hold this photo was like holding our friendship again. The paper was thin and fragile it almost felt like it could melt like a snowflake. I cradle it gently and try not to let my hands tear or curl any of the delicate edges. It has picked up a few creases over the years but the image is still crisp and clear. It has a strangely sweet smell like that perfume she used to be obsessed with – it immediately it transports me back to our youth, when she used to be the girl who wasn’t just a best friend but a sister
