paper 1 anatomy Flashcards
give 4 functions of the skeletal system
support
protection
movement
mineral storage
what is cartilage?
tough, flexible tissue at the end of bones which reduces friction and absorbs impact
what is synovial fluid?
a lubricant in joins to reduce friction
what is a capsule?
tough fibrous tissue which surrounds the synovial joint
what is the function of ligaments and tendons?
ligaments- joins bone to bone
tendons- joins muscle to bone
what is a bursae?
a fluid filled bag which reduces friction in the joint
what movement does a hinge joint allow?
flexion and extension
what movement does a ball and socket join allow?
many movements such as circumduction
define plantar flexion and dorsi flexion
plantar- the movement of toes towards the ground
dorsi- the movement of toes towards the knee
give 3 features of alveoli
- largue suerface area
- very good blood supply
- moist walls - allows diffusion of gases
cardiac system
what is the stroke volume?
the volume of blood pumped per beat
what is the cardiac cycle?
the sequence of events that occur when the heart is pumped
what is oxygen debt?
the temporary shortage of oxygen in the body after excersise
which is EPOC?
the increase in oxygen intake after excersise
what is hypertrophy?
the increase in muscle/heart size after long term excersise
