paper 1 Flashcards
ENERGY
is always conserved
cannot be created or destroyed
can be turned into mass
An object can have energy in the following stores…
KINETIC ENERGY
GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY
ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY
THERMAL ENERGY
Energy transfers
things happen when objects interact (in what we call a ‘SYSTEM’) and energy is transferred from one store to another, or between objects
e.g. if an object falls, GPE is transferred to KE.
in a closed system, GPE at top = KE at bottom
CLOSED SYSTEM
no energy is transferred to (or from) the surroundings
so we say e.g. KE = GPE or KE = EPE
if there is less KE at the bottom than GPE at the top, this cannot be the case - energy must be lost to the surroundings by friction/ air resistance
