PANIC DISORDER & AGORAPHOBIA ASSESSMENT Flashcards
ADIS (Interview for anxiety disorders)
Data on frequency, intensity and duration of panic attacks and details on avoidance behavior- important to tailor treatment
PDSS (Panic disorder severity scale)
Rates severity on seven areas: frequency, distress, anticipatory anxiety, agoraphobic and interoceptive-related fears, avoidant behavior and work and social impairment
PASQ (Panic attack symptoms questionnaire)
Composed of 33 items of possible symptoms of a panic attack - the patient rates each item from 0-5 based on the duration of the symptoms
PACQ (Panic attack cognitions questionnaire)
Consists of 23 items on negative cognitions associated with panic attacks
APPQ (Albany panic and phobia questionnaire)
Assesses fear and avoidance of activities that produce feared bodily sensations. Useful in profiling agoraphobic vs interoceptive avoidance
ACQ (Anxiety Control Questionnaire)
Assesses perceived lack of control over anxiety-related events and occurrences, such as internal
emotional reactions or externally threatening cues.
ASI (Anxiety sensitivity inventory)
Includes: Physical, mental disability and social concerns. Measures threatening beliefs about bodily sensation and discriminate panic and agoraphobia from other anxiety disorders.

4 factors: anticipatory anxiety, physical catasatrophes, emotional catastrophes and self- disapproval

The client rates their avoidance level (1-5) of 26 situations when alone and when accompanied. Three factors: avoidance of public places, closed places, open places
TSMS (Texas safety maneuver scale)
Evaluates the frequency of safety behaviors (active safety and avoiding typical agoraphobic situations) + other types, e.g., relaxation techniques
Medical evaluation
Several medical conditions should be ruled out before assigning the diagnosis of panic disorder
Self- monitoring
Contributes to self-awareness, reduces negative affect and provides feedback and useful material for in-session discussions
Standardized behavioral test for agoraphobic avoidance
Involves walking or driving a specific route
Standardized behavioral tests for anxiety about physical sensations
Involves exercises that induce panic-like symptoms e.g., hyperventilation
