Women 16%
Men 7%
Causes of phobias
Traumatic conditioning of fear
Genetic & temperamental factors effect speed & strength of fear response
Evolutionary preparedness
Evolutionary preparedness
Easier to develop fears for some things than others (eg snakes easier than flowers- almost impossible)
Treating phobias
Exposure
Gradually
Establishes a response hierarchy
Systematic desensitisation
Systemic desensitisation
Start with picture, move up hierarchy until they are no longer afraid. Exposure- never avoid. Go through steps, learn it’s not as bad as you think.
Different phobia treatments:
Participant modelling
Virtual reality therapy
Social phobia
