Pancytopenia Flashcards
What is pancytopenia?
Def of blood cells of all lineages (generally excludes lymphocytes)
How does Fanconi’s anaemia present?
Short stature Skin pigmentation abnormality Hypogenitalia Endocrinopathies GI defects
Roughly at what age does Fanconi’s anaemia present?
Around 7
Outline the pathophysiology in Fanconi’s anaemia
Can’t proof read or correct cross links errors in DNA
What is the pathophysiology of idiopathic aplastic anaemia?
Autoimmune attack against hemopoietic cells by T cells leading to hypocellular bone marrow
Describe myelodysplasia
Hypercellular bone marrow but no increase in cells outwith this are the cells produced are ineffective/dysplastic
How does acute leukaemia prevent normal haemopoeisis?
Alters microenvironment in the bone marrow
Describe the bone marrow in idiopathic aplastic anaemia
Hypocellular
Give secondary causes of pancytopenia
Iatrogenic
B12/Folate def
HIV
Describe the bone marrow is drug-induced pancytopenia
Hypocellular
Describe the bone marrow in b12/folate def
Hypercellular

Which vein drains the spleen?
Splenic
Give causes of hypersplenism
Portal HTN
Congestive heart failure
Rheumatoid arthritis
Splenic lymphoma
