Pancreas Flashcards
What are the parts of the pancreas?
What cells make up the Islets of Langerhans?
- Alpha cells: glucagon
- Beta cells: insulin
- D cells: somatostatins
What is the anatomical level of the pancreas?
Thetranspyloric plane(L1)
What is the ductal drainage system of the pancreas?
- The main pancreatic duct (of Wirsung) drains head, body, and tail and opens into the major duodenal papilla.
- The accessory pancreatic duct (of Santorini) drains the uncinate process and opens into the minor duodenal papilla.
What vessels are encountered during Whipple?
- Abdominal aorta
- Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and superior mesenteric vein (SMV)
- Portal vein (PV)
- Left renal vein
- Splenic vein
- Superior and inferior pancreaticoduodenal arteries
What is the ligament that connects the tail of the pancreas with the spleen?
Lienorenal (splenorenal) ligament
What is the peritoneal relation of the pancreas?
All is retroperitoneal except for the tail
What is the blood supply of the Pancreas?
- Celiac trunk → Common hepatic artery → Gastroduodenal artery → superior pancreaticoduodenal artery
- SMA → inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery
- Celiac trunk → Splenic artery → Pancreatic branches
What vessel is present behind/above the body of the pancreas?
Splenic artery
What vessel is present behind the neck of the pancreas?
Portal vein
What space is present anterior the pancreas?
Lesser sac
What is the development of the pancreas?
- Ventral bud: From the hepatic diverticulum and it gives rise to the lower part of the head and uncinate process.
- Dorsal bud: From the dorsal aspect of the duodenum and gives rise to upper part of the head, neck, body, and tail.
