Athletic competitions, men only. -Stadion, length of stadium -Diaulos: twice Stadion -Hippios: 4X Stadion -Dolichos: About 3 miles -Race in Armour: Shields, grieves, and helmets provided. Length of Diaulos. After a set point, helmet + grieves abandoned. 70 drachma prizes for each. -Pentathlon: Long jump, wrestling, javelin, Stadion, discuss. ALL AGE GROUPS. Heavy events (ALL AGE GROUPS): -Wrestling: 'Upright' + 'ground' -Boxing: No time limit. -Pankration: (Everyone's favourite!) All fighting techniques except biting + gouging out eyes.

Equestrian competitions.
-Oldest competitions.
-Took place in the Agora, some Hippodrome.
-Must provide own horse. Some events only for citizens.
Competitions:
-Chariot race: Pulled by 2 or 4 horses, 12 laps of Hippodrome. 140 drachma prize for fully grown horse, 40 for foal.
-Apobates race: Charioteer + armed citizen, mount + dismount chariot whilst it is still moving. Separate prizes.
-Anthippasia: Contest between 10 tribes, 5 line up facing other 5. Engage in mock ‘battle’, groups pass between each other extremely quickly.
-Horseback javelin: Whilst horse is galloping, rider must throw javelin at target (usually a shield). Points awarded for javelin nearest to centre of target.
What contests took place on the sixth day of the Panathenaia, who could take part, and what prizes were awarded? (2 facts + 3 sub-contests + prizes!)
Traditional, local games.
-Contested between 10 tribes. Only open to citizens.
-All involve some sort of procession, usually war dance.
-Euandria: Manly excellence contest.
-Pyrrhic dance: Based off Athene’s victory dance from when the Olympians defeated the Titans. Competitors hold a javelin + spear and are accompanied by a flautist.
-Boat race: Includes speed contest + mock battle.
Prizes: Oxen and money.
What contests took place on the seventh day of the Panathenaia, who could take part, and what prizes were awarded? (Several facts + 1 sub-contests)
Torch race and all-night vigil.
- Torch race: 4 youths from each tribe carry torch from altar of Prometheus to Acropolis. Runner of tribe who arrives first wins. He then lights fire so sacrifice may be performed on the altar.
- One fire lit, all night vigil begins.
What contests took place on the eighth day of the Panathenaia, who could take part, and what prizes were awarded? (5 facts)
Procession to Acropolis + Sacrifice.
- Most important events.
- Giant peplos carried to the Parthenon. Priestesses put on statue.
- Went through Agora.
- Started at Dipylon Gate, ended at Parthenon.
- Order of procession: Women, priestesses, metics, musicians, old men, soldiers + horsemen, animals.
