PAM skills check Flashcards
• Be aware of precautions when applying ice massage.
sensitive to cold temperatures
open wounds
issues with sensation
over a nerve/ bony prominence
• Write down contraindications may exist with applying cold
b/p issues young/old applying where nerves are located (behind elbow/funny bone) and over bony prominences sensation issues open wound no medicated patches
• Write down 2 neurophysiological effects with cold application
Vasoconstriction of vessels Pain reduction Decrease muscle spasticity Increase pain threshold Decrease edema Decrease inflammation
• Write down 2 adverse reactions with cold application
- cold burn
- swollen bumps
- rash
- prolonged burning sensation
- pain
• Write down 2 clinical indications of why cold massage would be used
Acute injury,
tendonitis
arthritis
• Write down how long you would generally apply the ice massage (total duration) and identify checking (how often do you check the skin)
Approximately 3 to 10 minutes but no more than 10! Check skin every 5-8 seconds
• Why we use ice massage over traditional ice pack (you will need to write this down)
Focuses cold on a smaller area.
Ice massage stages client will feel & when to stop
CBAN
cold, burning, aching, numbness
Write down how long you would generally apply the cold pack (total duration) and identify checking
15-20 min check every 5
• Be aware of precautions when applying heat pack.
Open wound Acute injury Edema Pregnancy Cardiac insufficiency Metals Demyelinated nerves Age (young or old)
• Write down what contraindications may exist with applying heat
Using heat during the inflammatory phase Acute injury Edema Impaired cognition Pregnancy Cardiac insufficiency Metals Demyelinated nerve Young/old
• Be able to identify 2 neurophysiological effects with heat application and write them down
Vasodilation- opens veins increases blood flow
Relieve muscle spasms
Decrease pain
Decrease joint stiffness
• Be able to identify 2 adverse reactions with heat application and write them down
Inflammation Chemical reaction Reddened skin blistering burns
• Be able to identify 2 clinical indications of why heat pack would be used and write them down
Injury is past the inflammatory phase and into proliferation phase or remodeling
It is a chronic injury or reoccurring pain (arthritis, tendonitis, back pain etc)
Joint stiffness
Muscle spasm
• Be able to identify how long you would generally apply the heat pack (total duration) and identify checking (how often do you check the skin) and write this down
15-20 min depending on how deep the injury is check every 5 minutes
