PALPATIONS Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how to locate the ASIS by palpation
A
Most prominent bump of bone
- Inguinal lig and TFL attach
2
Q
Describe how to locate the iliac crest
A
Work two open hands down the waist until you feel bony crest
3
Q
Describe how to locate the pubic tubercle
A
- Sensitive area (Ask for consent)
- Most lateral part of pubic crest
- Inguinal lig attaches to it
4
Q
Describe how to locate the pubic symphysis
A
- Sensitive area (ask for consent)
- Test for movement by placing a finger either side of the joint and walking
5
Q
Describe how to locate the pubic crest
A
- Runs between the pubic tubercle + pubic symphysis
- Rectus abdominis originates here
6
Q
Describe how to locate the iliopsoas
A
- Difficult to palpate
- Patient to lay on their back
- Palpate deeply where the muscles cross the inferior pelvis under the Inguinal lig
- Gently flex the hip to feel iliopsoas contracting under your finger tips
7
Q
Describe how to locate Psoas minor
A
- Difficult to palpate
- Just below the Inguinal lig
- Medial to Iliacus
8
Q
Describe how to locate the Inguinal lig
A
- Difficult to palpate
- It is along a straight line between the ASIS and pubic tubercle
- Just the lower border of the abdominal muscles such as the external oblique
9
Q
Describe how to locate rectus abdominis
A
-Origin: pubic symphysis, pubic crest
- Insertion: xiphoid process, costal cartilages of ribs 5-7
- Vertical midline is linea alba
- Rectus sheath = aponeurotic sheet of CT that envelops it and is part of the thoracolumbar fascia
10
Q
Describe how to locate sartorius
A
- Difficult to palpate
- Very long and thin
- Seen when you sit cross legged
- Cuts across the thigh more proximally
- Origin: ASIS
- Insertion: pes anserinus
11
Q
Describe how to locate AIIS
A
- Difficult to palpate
- Very deep, so press firmly
- About 3cm below and a bit medial to ASIS
- Directly beneath sartorius
12
Q
Describe how to locate rectus Femoris
A
- Only quadricep that crosses the hip
- Midline throughout
- Seen as a “V” just above the vastus lateral is and medialis muscle
- Roughly 3cm below the AIIS
- More of a muscle bulk, lateral sartorius
- Keep leg straight
- Can feel the tendon 3cm below
- Slightly medially AIIS
- Origin: AIIS
- Insertion: Tibial tuberosity (via the patella)
