What is the difference between impressionism and post-impressionism
A
- Impressionism:
- > more naturalistic, realistic lighting, reaction to realism, interpretation based on the scene, aesthetic-focused
- Post-impressionism:
- > more abstract, unrealistic lighting, typically more vivid and unnatural colors, reaction to impressionism, interpretation based on the artist.

Divisionism
A
- separation of colors into individual dots that interacted optically to create an image.
- Divisionism developed along with Pointillism, which was also defined by the use of dots but did not necessarily focus on the separation of colors.

Brief overview on the life of Van Gogh
A
- was commercially unsuccessful in his life
- got famous post-mortem
- symbol: the sunflowers, he enjoyed them and made a collection of 8 different kinds
- grown up poor
- was a “madman” who many suspected to have a mental illness -> got taken in to a mental health facility
- there, he made many paintings
- perhaps his painting was his ways of self-expression and coping?
- travelled for art: was inspired by the avant-garde art in paris -> experimented with color, breaking away from his previous style (Potato Eaters) during his time in the Netherlands

Post-impressionist paintings features
A
the artists continued using vivid colors, a thick application of paint and real-life subject matter, but were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, distort forms for an expressive effect and use unnatural and seemingly random colors.
