Signifier
something that points to another thing.
- perceptible cues
symbols, icons, logos
e.g. the apple can refer to the company or how the flag of Lebanon can point to Lebanon
Signified
the message or thing you want to communicate
e..g. Lebanon is signified by its flag
Rule of Thirds
the grid pattern on how the eye views something. Often looks at the intersection or the spacing.
Good way to mark the composition of the picture itself. Can point where the emphasis is.
Composition
Arrangement of objectives in relation to each other
Negative space
complements the positive space
Limited visual information (generally)
can leave a lot for interpretation
light and depth
involving the lighting (intensity and strength, atmospheric, tone)
Colour and contrast
the color wheel theory (complementary. analogous, split complementary, monochromatic, etc.)
- color carries connotations BUT they do not exist in a vacuum
ROYGBIV but in circle form
Visual narrative
a relationship between the signifier and the signified
Anchoring
making an image meaningful by adding words
Font type and color
decides the tone

upper left and right corners of the magazine
Could intice the reader to read because it’s in the direction of opening a book

some kind of description, smaller than headings
Body language
- smiles and teeth - facial expression
- gaze: the magazine figure’s gaze (eyes closed - usually internal)
Why do subjects of magazines gaze at the audience?
For a deeper connection with the audience:
- at times, empathy
- gives off the feel that it’s as if the figure is present with the reader like staring at each other as an interaction/engagement with audience

- largest font size of the magazine
- that shows off the name of the magazine
Magazine deck
- not always present
Magazine issue
- 2 parts: The volume and the issue
- The volume refers to the years that the magazine has been out
- the issues refer to how many times the magazine was published during the year
Main image
- Usually a photograph or illustration
- Depends on the art direction of the magazine and sometimes even their issue
Lead article line
- Every magazine has a main theme for an issue
- makes the lead article line on a cover

Other lines of the cover, usually of other articles
