Paint, Matches, Impressions Flashcards
what is paint
suspension of pigments and additives in a binder
what does binder/resin do
allows pigment portion to distribute
what does pigment do
add colour
what is electrocoat primer
it is pretreatment of the metal with zinc to prevent rusting
what is primer
a layer before the base coat to prevent corrosion (same color as base coat)
what is the base coat
it is the color layer of the paints can be single or multilayer
what is clear coat
on top of the base coat for gloss and durability
can paint layers be individualized
no it cannot be it can be narrowed down in class characteristics but never individualized
what is the first step of paint identification
microscopic analysis of layer sequences
what is the second step of paint anaylsis
it is chemical analysis (micro spectrophotometry, pyrolysis GC, IR spec, Xray diffusion, SEM - elemental analysis)
what is the third step of paint analysis
it is then compared to a data base
what are the steps of collecting paint samples
- photograph
- remove with forceps
- place in druggist fold
- include all loose material
how to you collect smears
you would take a razor and crave out all of the smeared part of the paint
where do you collect the known sample
you collect it from near the damage NOT ON
what is tape not used to lift paint samples
adhesive can stick onto the paint and affect the chemical analysis
what is association is strengthened by
of layers, layer sequence, layer colors
what are physical matches
physically matching the fracture to the fracture only way to identifiy
what is the addition transfer meathods
substrate on cloth and the impression is left on a person
what is removal transfer meathods
where fiber is left in a puddle of substrate and the fiber absorbs some of the substrate leaving a pattern
what is embedded transfer methods
where fabric is pushed down into a plastic substance, impression left
